TOP TIPS
In 2006 it was a shock in the south east of the country when a hose pipe ban was introduced before even the first day of spring in March! With our climate even more variable then ever, it is best to be prepared.
In the spring it is easy to get carried away buying trees and shrubs from garden centres but think carefully if you will be able to look after them well if there is a drought. Site and plant your tree properly and if you can, add a watering tube to ensure that when you water, it reaches the roots. Remember, lack of moisture causes stress which increases the susceptibility of plants diseases and pests. 'Grey Water' (from your bath or sink) should be used within 24 hours to minimize bacterial growth. Soften tap water and from dishwashers is less useful as the salts it contains can damage soil structure especially clay soils.
Mulching will help soil retain moisture. A mulch of good garden compost will also contain some beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, and it is good to put this under the drip line of all trees in early spring but for new plantings, give a good weed free mulch 50 - 100mm (2- 4 inches) all around the tree whilst avoid touching the stem. This way the tree will be able to make most of the water the tree receives.
St. George's Day - Celebrations of Blossoms
St. George's Day, Wednesday April 23rd celebrations have been neglected but from tree enthusiasts comes the suggestion to invite friends to enjoy the bloSssoms of the many trees and shrubs that bloom then, with a party in much the same way the Japanese do with 'hanami' (flower viewing) in their own gardens or local parks lit by lanterns and garden lights.
As St Georges Day is midweek this year, you can commemorate it after work and supper. Plan to enjoy the brief time of beautiful blossoms from all over the world by inviting friends and neighbours to share experience with you. It only needs a few lanterns or using the outdoor Christmas lights in the garden. This a wonderful yet inexpensive and easy way for everyone to celebrate St George's Day.
